The closing part of this study presents the most important dichotomic and trichotomic anthropological models from the era of Reformation (Erasmus, Calvin, Bullinger, the Confessio Helvetica Posterior, the Heidelberg Catechism, István Szegedi Kis) and provides a synthesis of the anthropological view of 20th century theology (Karl Barth, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Oscar Cullmann, Jenő Sebestyén, István Török, Botond Gaál, and others). The conclusion to the historical presentation is followed by an inquiry into the possibilities to apply the results of the anthropological investigations to other fields of theology.

Following an earlier semantic analysis of biblical terms (published in Református Szemle 105.3 (2015)), the present paper introduces the reader into the significance of theological anthropology for the most important authors of the Early Church.

In this paper we provide a short semantic analysis of the most important anthropological terms of the Bible. By this analysis we would like to point out that in the biblical anthropological view humans cannot be divided into either two or three parts, but they are unitary beings. What we call flesh (body), soul and spirit (or mind) are not independent substances but rather different aspects of manifestation of the same being. On the one side, we see that terms denoting the soul, body or spirit can also refer the whole man as well. On the other side, the Bible does not provide pure anthropology, because anthropology always appears in the context of other important topics of theology (hamartology, soteriology, etc.).

This article intends to present and evaluate the homiletical heritage of the great Hungarian representative of Puritanism, Pál Medgyesi. He wrote the first Hungarian manual on homiletics, entitled: Doce nos orare quin et praedicare. It is argued here that his method of writing a sermon presented in this manual provides a considerable support to improve the preaching of the Hungarian Reformed Church in the 21th century. This improvement is not to be achieved merely copying of his methodology but by the reflectively rethinking his theological-homiletical approach.

In this short paper we propose to present the teaching of the Bible concerning the love of our neighbours. Starting with Romans 13:10, where apostle Paul asserts that love is the fulfilling of the law, we analyse those biblical passages in which the traces of this topic can be found. We aim to show that both the Old and the New Testament highlights the importance of the love towards God and our neighbours. At the end of our survey we discuss this topic in the light of the threefold use of God’s Law.

Az Apostoli Hitvallásnak talán legtitokzatosabb és számtalan kérdést fölvető szakasza az a hittétel, amelyben arról van szó, hogy az Úr Jézus Krisztus alászállt a poklokra. Az apokrif irodalom plasztikus képekkel ábrázolja, hogy milyen is lehetett a Megváltó pokolra szállása. Elég elolvasnunk például Nikodémus evangéliumának szemléletes beszámolóját: hogyan dőlnek le Jézus érkezésére a Hádész bronzkapui; hogyan szabadulnak meg a pátriárkák és próféták; s végül pedig, miként veri Jézus láncra a Sátánt, és adja át Hádésznak, hogy őrizze az ő második eljöveteléig. Az apokrif irodalom legendákra és sokszor fantáziára épülő termékei mindmáig meghatározzák az említett hitcikkely értelmezését.

Jelen dolgozat célja: megvizsgálni, hogyan magyarázta Kálvin János az ellenség iránti szeretetről szóló bibliai tanítást, és a vizsgálat eredményéből levonni a mai etikára néző következtetéseket. A vizsgálódás első szakaszában számba vesszük azokat a szentírásbeli helyeket, ahol az ellenség iránti szeretetről van szó, és ismertetjük, hogyan magyarázta ezeket Kálvin a megfelelő bibliai könyvekhez írott kommentárjaiban. Ezt követően pedig a teljesség igénye nélkül ismertetjük, mivel egészítik ki az eddig kialakult képet azok az Institutióban található szakaszok, amelyekben az ellenség szeretetéről ír.

In this short paper I would like to provide a comparative analysis of the passages concerning the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Early Christian confessions (among them the Apostolic Creed1 as well), because these passages are frequently the source of theological misunderstanding and debates. The main question which urged me to do this research had occurred in relation with the Apostolic Creed. How do we say correctly: ‘I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell…’ or ‘I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, under Pontius Pilate He was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell…’? I shall try to answer this question by analysing the relevant passages of the creeds which were composed in the first six centuries.

Nemcsak a római egyházban gyakorolták az ördögűzést, hanem a 11–12. századi megújulási mozgalmakban, sőt a reformátori egyházakban is. Az albigensek egyetlen szentsége a vigasztalás (consolamentum) volt, melyet ördögűzés és kézfeltétel által szolgáltattak ki. A lutheránus egyházban egyre növekvő ellenállások közepette a 18. századig gyakorolták a keresztelés előtti ördögűzést. És arra is van példa, hogy a reformáció helvét irányának követői is – minden valószínűség szerint katolikus hatásra – bizonyos módosításokkal gyakorolták az ördögűzést.

Theodoret of Cyrus: Haereticarum Fabularum Compendium – On Simon Magus. Here we publish a passage concerning Simon Magus from the Haereticarum Fabularum Compendium by Theodoret of Cyrus. The person of Simon Magus fades within the obscurity of legends. The published sources concerning him may be divided in three groups: the New Testament (Acts 8,5–25), the writings of the Church Fathers and the legends which arose concerning his person. All the Church Fathers present him as arch-heretic. In the introduction of this translation we will follow the way of Simon in the New Testament and in the writings of the scholars of the Early Church from his youth to his death. After having presented his life we will try to sketch out his teaching based on the available secondary sources. While Simon wrote no book from which we could reconstruct his teaching, we are acquainted with his doctrine only from the above mentioned writings. The conclusion of our introduction ends by our question concerning the possible identity of Simon of the New Testament with Simon Magus referred to by the Church Fathers.

The Passion of Christ in the Early Christian Creeds. In this short paper I present a pending question of the Christological passage of the Apostolic Confession. According to the teaching of the Bible, the passion of the Lord could not be summarized in this sentence: “he suffered under Pontius Pilate”, because the Lord has not suffered only under Pontius Pilate, but in his whole life, as we read it in the Epistle of Paul to the Philippians: “but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men” (Phil 2,7). So, the passion of Christ begins with his “keno/sij”, and his whole life can be summarized in this word: “he suffered”. After a biblical introduction through a historical analysis of the early Christian confessions I try to prove that the correct form of the Christological passage of the Apostolic Confession is the following: “[I believe] in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary and suffered; under Pontius Pilate was crucified, died, and was buried…”

By the Sound of a Great Crowd. In this short writing our purpose is to examine the problems of translation and interpretation of Jeremiah 11,16. In this biblical verse the word hmlh has many possibilities of translation. After a short presentation of the biblical background I will examine the Hungarian, English, German, Dutch, French, Greek and Latin translations of this biblical verse, and finally I will present my own translation. At the end of this paper I am going to draw a parallel between the meanings of this image in the Old and New Testament. The Hebrew dictionaries given many meanings of the word hmlh: roaring sound, tempest and crowd. The LXX renders the word hmlh by circumcision, which is grammatically impossible. Hieronymus translates it with loquella, which means speaking. In Calvin’s Latin translation we read sermo, and in an additional note tumultus. In the German translations we can read große (Kriegs-) Getöse, ein großes Geprassel, Mordgeschrei. In the French translations we read about un bruit fracassant and au bruit d’un grand fracas. The Dutch versions translate it either by tempest, or by een geluid van een groot geroep. The majority of the English translations keep the ambivalence of the text, translating the word hmlh with tumult. But Robert Davidson translates it by tempest, and in other less known English translations we find: But I will set you on fire, fire that will blaze with a mighty roar – He has set fire to it, and its branches are consumed with a great roaring sound. Finally I have suggested the following translation: By the sound of a great crowd He has set fire to it. According to this translation the meaning of this biblical passage is changing as follows: the secret sin will be followed by a public punishment – As the thief is shamed when he is discovered, so the house of Israel is shamed (Jer 2,26). As a New Testament parallel we should read John 15,1–8.

God’s blessing. In this short writing our purpose is to set forth the meaning and the biblical roots of the blessing in the Christian liturgy. Many people consider that the blessing is the final action of the Christian worship. Furthermore we witness the depreciation and trivializing of the blessing. But having analysed the meaning of the Greek, Latin and Hebrew words we have to state that blessing is not the final action of the liturgy. Blessing is not the end, but the beginning of the Christian worship. By the blessing God’s name is pronounced over the children of Israel (Numbers 6,27). The history of the world and of mankind has started with God’s blessing. God’s blessing gives us the possibility to maintain our life and to lead a pious life.
